Grande Anello Valnerina, route for people with full mobility - Stage 3

GAV-ppm-03 The third stage of the Valnerina route: from the village of Castelvecchio to that of Sant'Antonio.

Leaving the built-up area of Castelvecchio, take the SP 473/3 that leads to the village of Sacco Vescio. The village straddles the Valnerina and the Campiano river valley (Castoriana valley): it is a mountain villa located along the road between Preci and Visso. A Roman cippus from the 1st century B.C., made of travertine and carved with a flute satyr between two dancers, is one of the ancient remains that characterise this village. Outside the village is the Church of the Holy Spes, dating from 1350, of which only a single lancet window and apse remain today. Here, it is also possible to pay a visit to the small church of the Madonna della Neve, not far from the village centre.

Follow the provincial road for just under 1 km, where you leave it to take a path to the left (at a sharp bend from the asphalt road). This will be the path leading to Preci, reaching it on its eastern side until it rejoins Provincial Road SP 476/2.
Continuing along the provincial road for about 250 m and then taking a path to the left, with difficulty one reaches the area most affected by the 2016 earthquake. In this respect, Preci is one of the places that bears significant signs of it: the damage suffered by religious buildings is inestimable, such as the Abbey of Sant'Eutizio dating back to 1400 AD, which was almost destroyed.

We head towards the town of Preci, in the surroundings of which, unfortunately compromised by the earthquake, are the remains of the village of Acquaro. Built around 1200 AD, it is an ancient castle, of whose structure the tower and entrance gate remain. Its perched position made it easy to defend and allowed control of the Castoriana valley below and the nearby abbey of Sant'Eutizio.

We continue downhill towards the SP476/2, followed for a short distance to then take a path that runs parallel to the Campiano torrent until we cross it to reach one of the symbolic places of the Valnerina, in terms of beauty and fame: Campi di Norcia, the third stage destination.
